The short answer

An uncontested BC divorce with a signed separation agreement typically runs $1,500–$4,000 in total legal fees. A contested divorce with parenting or property disputes typically starts at a $5,000–$15,000 retainer and grows with the level of conflict. High-net-worth or high-conflict files can exceed $50,000.

Hourly rates in BC (2026)

Family law rates cluster in three bands: junior counsel $250–$375/hr, mid-career counsel $375–$500/hr, and senior counsel $500–$800/hr and above. Rates in Kelowna and the Okanagan tend to run 10–20% below Vancouver rates.

Flat fees are common for narrow scope
